How inconceivable is the length God will go to meet us where we are, His desire for intimacy with us, and His total emptying of Himself although He is omnipotent! He not only became a man, a suffering servant, a helpless baby, an embryo, He goes further and is given to us to chew in what appears to be bread. “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.” Now, this is where a mysterious exchange takes place. Although Jesus enters into us, we also enter into Him. With our body, soul and spirit we enter in Holy Communion to abide in Christ. We take up residence in Christ. That way, the risen Jesus of Nazareth revives our body, the Eternal Logos absorbs our soul, and the Second Person of the one, triune God draws in our spirit, thus leading us to be joined to the Holy Trinity itself. Even unwittingly, a mystical union is taking place; the most intimate moment we can share with God this side of Heaven. This is a divine kiss that prepares us for that ecstatic joy of being united with God in the next life. Please write me for permission to use this image for First Holy Communion certificates.
