Commitment

Each color chosen for these blocks, that must be stacked and balanced, stands for some facet of married life: red for sexual intimacy, purple for the running of the home and the raising of children, blue for friendship and relationships, green for work and finances, and yellow for leisure and spiritual cultivation.

These compartments of married life may be difficult to keep stacked in the turbulent waters of this life, as represented by the gray, lower portion of the painting. What pulls and aligns a marriage to maintain its proper order is commitment. The white line in the painting stands for that.

Commitment is a decision because true love is a decision — love cannot rely on the ebb and tide of feelings. It is in commitment that love is proven, and only by virtue of each spouse’s commitment that marriage endures.
