Zacchaeus is a great example of a proper response to grace.
His conversion began with a simple curiosity about Jesus. Being too short to see Jesus in a crowd, he devised a plan. Would that we are as diligent and creative in overcoming our spiritual shortcomings!
He showed perseverance in climbing the sycamore tree. When Jesus stopped along the way and called him down, he obeyed immediately. Jesus initiated the invitation to Zacchaeus’ home, that is, his heart, and his response was eager, joyful and grateful.
When the crowd reminded him of his sinful nature, he was not discouraged. He confessed his sins before all and resolved to make amends. Zacchaeus could now stand tall because salvation had come to him.
